It took a little while for the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense to work up a head of steam against the Washington Commanders
’ amped-up defense – but once it did, Kansas City cruised to a 28-7 victory in the Week 8 edition of “Monday Night Football” on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. With their third win in as many games — in which they have outscored their opponents 89-24 — the Chiefs move to 5-3 on the season.First quarter
The Chiefs won the coin toss and deferred. Wide receiver Luke McCaffrey took Harrison Butker’s
kickoff in front of the end zone and returned the ball to the Washington 43-yard line to start the opening drive. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota began the game with a six-yard throw to wideout Deebo Samuel. Mariota then rushed for three of the remaining yards. On third-and-1, rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt rushed for three yards for a new set of downs at the Kansas City 45. Mariota and Samuel connected again on first down for five yards, and Croskey-Merritt gained two yards on second down. On third-and-3, Mariota gained seven yards for a first down at the 31. A throw to McCaffrey gained nine more yards immediately, and Croskey-Merritt again moved the chains. As the drive moved to the red zone, Mariota attempted to find Samuel on first down. The ball bounced off of the wideout’s hands — and into those of defensive end Mike Danna for an interception. After a ten-yard return, the Chiefs would take over at their own 32.
Isiah Pacheco began the drive with a two-yard carry, but a sack on Patrick Mahomes on second down wiped out the gain. Mahomes nearly gained the needed ten yards on third down, but his foot went out of bounds just shy of the marker. On fourth-and-one from the Kansas City 41, running back Kareem Hunt barreled for five yards to keep the drive going. Brashard Smith became the third running back to touch the ball on the next play, but he barely made the line of scrimmage. On second down, Mahomes found Xavier Worthy for 27 yards to the Washington 26. The two could not connect on the next play as Mahomes overthrew Worthy. After Mahomes was incomplete on second down, he threw an interception to Washington cornerback Marshon Lattimore while targeting Hollywood Brown. The Commanders took over at their own seven-yard line.
Croskey-Merritt gained four yards on first down and two more the play after. On third-and-2 from the 15, found running back Jeremy McNichols for a 24-yard gain. McCaffrey brought in a sideline toe tapping catch to the Kansas City 44 for 17 yards. Running back Chris Rodriguez gained three yards. George Karlaftis sacked Mariota on third down. On fourth-and-6 from the 40, a throw to tight end Zach Ertz that appeared to narrowly make the line to gain. The league’s “virtual measurement,” however, ruled Ertz was tackled just short. Kansas City took over at their own 35.
The Commanders sniffed out a screen to Rashee Rice on first down for a 14-yard loss. On the final play of the first quarter, Mahomes and Rice connected on second down to set up third-and-4 at the Kansas City 41 on the other side of the break.
Second quarter
JuJu Smith-Schuster caught Mahomes’ third-down pass to move the chains. Mahomes scrambled for seven yards to the Washington 47. Travis Kelce’s first catch of the night went for a one-yard loss. On third-and-4, Mahomes found Kelce, but the legendary tight end saw the ball bounce off of his hands, and Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner came down with Mahomes’ second interception of the night. Washington took over at their own 41.
Tight end John Bates caught a 22-yard pass on first down to move the drive to the Kansas City 37. Mariota gained eight yards on a scramble, but a throw to Samuel on second down went nowhere. A throw to Ertz on third-and-2 gained only a yard after a massive tackle by safety Jaden Hicks. On fourth down, Mariota was under pressure, and badly overthrew wideout Terry McLaurin. The Chiefs took over at their own 28-yard line.
Pacheco gained eight yards over the first two plays to set up third-and-2. Kelce hauled in the key catch this time for 11 yards to the 47. On the next play, the legendary duo connected again as Kelce hauled in a 31-yard pass to the Washington 22. Pacheco gained six yards to the 16. A short play to Smith was marked just short. Hunt then burst through on third down to set up first-and-goal from the eight. Rice took a snap from the Wildcat for what appeared to be an eight-yard rushing touchdown but was ruled short on review. Hunt effortlessly punched it in a play later to finally open the scoring. Butker’s extra point opened the scoring at Chiefs 7, Commanders 0.
Rookie Jaylin Lane returned Butker’s kick to the Washington 35-yard line. Nick Bolton dropped Croskey-Merritt for no gain on first down, but Mariota found tight end Ben Sinnott for 22 yards to the Kansas City 44. Two plays later, Mariota escaped a near certain sack for a four yard gain. On third-and-5 from the Chiefs’ 40, Mariota tossed to McNichols for 19 yards to the 20. Mariota lost a yard on a scramble as the first half reached the two-minute warning, and Washington would face seocnd-and-11 from the Chiefs’ 21 coming out of the break. Mariota’s throw to McNichols barely moved the chains to set up a first down just outside the ten-yard line. Mariota was dropped for a one-yard loss on first down. He appeared to nearly have a touchdown to Samuel, but the wideout narrowly came down out of bounds. On third down, the same story nearly played out with McLaurin called out of bounds on an end zone catch. On review, it was ruled a catch and a Commanders touchdown. Former Chief Matthew Wright came on for an extra point to tie the game 7-7.
Nikko Remigio brought the ball to the 35, but a holding call would start the drive at the 15 with only 53 seconds remaining before halftime. Mahomes scrambled for 15 yards to the 30, and found Kelce at the 40. After the Chiefs took their final timeout, Mahomes took a shot on first down and threw incomplete. On second down, he was incomplete deep to Worthy before a scrambling third down throw at the dirt. That play saw Mahomes called for intentional grounding. The ten-second runoff sent the game to halftime.
Third quarter
Remigio took the kickoff to the Kansas City 33, but another holding call would start the drive at the 20. Rice gained five yards on first down. Mahomes was incomplete to tight end Noah Gray on second down, but a late hit penalty gave the Chiefs 15 yards and a first down. Mahomes connected with Gray for eight yards on first down from the 40. Pacheco moved the chains to set up a first down at the Washington 47. Mahomes found Kelce on the move for 38 yards to set up first-and-goal at the nine. After a one-yard gain by Pacheco, a throw to Rice went out of bounds at the three. The first attempt at third-and-goal from the three saw offsetting penalties. On the second try, Mahomes could not connect with Gray in the end zone. Mahomes was able to throw a touchdown to Hunt on fourth down for the back’s second score of the night. Butker’s extra point gave the Chiefs their second lead of the night at 14-7.
Butker’s kickoff bounced off of Lane’s hands and went out of bounds at the one to start Washington’s offense. Croskey-Merritt gained two yards on first down. Mariota got the Commanders out of danger on second down with an 18-yard throw to McLaurin to the 22. After a five-yard rush by Croskey-Merritt, Mariota and Samuel could not find each other on second down. On third-and-5 from the 27, Mariota’s pass to Lane went off the rookie’s hands. Safety Bryan Cook narrowly missed an easy interception. Tress Way came on to punt. Remigio took the punt at the Kansas City 14, and he returned the ball 11 yards to start the drive at the 25-yard line.
Pacheco started the drive with an 11-yard rush. Mahomes then found Smith-Schuster for 24 yards to the Washington 41. After Hunt gained only a yard on first down, Rice took a 14-yard pass to 26 — and fell on his own fumble. A two-yard throw to Worthy on first down was followed by Rice picking up the remaining yardage for a new set of downs at the 15. Worthy caught a four-yard pass, and Mahomes found Kelce for a ten-yard touchdown a play later. That score marked Kelce’s 83rd touchdown as a Chief — tying running back Priest Holmes for the most in team history. Butker’s extra point extended the lead to Chiefs 21, Commanders 7.
Butker’s kickoff found the end zone, starting the Commanders at their own 35. Lane was tackled for no gain on a first down catch, and McNichols gained only two yards on second down. Mariota connected deep with McLaurin for 25 yards to the Kansas City 37. An end around to Samuel on first down went nowhere, and cornerback Jaylen Watson blew up a second down throw to McCaffrey. On third-and-11 from the Kansas City 39, Danna got home on Mariota for a nine-yard sack that bought the third quarter to an end. Washington would face fourth-and-21 from the Kansas City 47 coming out of the break.
Fourth quarter
Remigio called for a fair catch on Way’s punt at the six-yard line. Worthy gained nine yards on first down, and Hunt broke out for 11 yards on second down to the 26. Smith appeared to rush for a first down, but a holding call on Rice negated the play. On first-and-16 from the 20, Mahomes was sacked for a one-yard loss. Mahomes then found Rice for a first down at the 44. Unfortunately, the wideout was called for taunting to set up first-and-10 at the 29. Pacheco then ran for a first down to the 42. The back then gained four more yards on first down. On the next play, Mahomes and Gray connected for 15 yards to the Washington 39. Hunt gained seven yards on first down, but Mahomes could not find Gray deep on second. On third-and-3, Rice went for 11 yards to the 20. After Pacheco gained two yards on first down, Mahomes outran a sack to find Rice on the move for an 18-yard touchdown. Butker’s extra point extended the lead to Chiefs 28, Commanders 7.
Another kickoff touchback started the Commanders at their own 35, but a false start on rookie tackle Josh Conerly immediately moved them back five yards. Mariota was incomplete on first down before being brought down on a scramble for only a yard on second. On third-and-9 from the 36, Mariota was incomplete to Ertz in the face of a “zero blitz.” Way came on to punt. Remigio fielded the kick at the 23 and appeared to have a solid return to the 39. But a blocking foul would start the drive at the Kansas City 15-yard line.
Hunt gained four yards on first down as the clock ticked near the six-minute mark. Mahomes took a sack on second down, but defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton played through the whistle and drew a 15-yard penalty. Hunt went for no gain to start the new set of downs. Worthy caught a short second down pass, and then he ran backwards around the entire offense and defense for an 11-yard gain. Pacheco appeared to gain a first down, but the play had the duel problems of the back limping to the sideline injured and seeing the play negated with a holding call. Hunt gained five yards to set up third-and-9. Rice gained only three yards, and Matt Araiza came on for his first punt with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Lane fielded the kick at the five yard line, and he returned the ball 15 yards to start the drive at the Washington 20.
Karlaftis batted a screen pass on first down for an incompletion. Ertz caught a five-yard pass that brought the game to the two-minute warning. On third-and-5 from the Washington 25-yard line, Chris Jones gave Washington the needed yardage with an offsides penalty (negating an interception by cornerback Joshua Williams). With defensive subs largely in for Kansas City, the Commanders gained a third down with short runs by McNichols. On first down, Mariota threw an interception that counted to reserve linebacker Jack Cochrane. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Chiefs took over at their own 35-yard line.
With only 12 seconds remaining, Mahomes kneeled to end the game. The Chiefs win their third in a row to move to 5-3 on the season — with an always important matchup with the Buffalo Bills looming in Week 9.
Injuries
Running back Isiah Pacheco limped off the field in the fourth quarter after taking a hit to the knee. After being checked out, Pacheco was seen moving around the sideline. The Chiefs did not announce an injury status for Pacheco, implying he would have been available to re-enter the game.
