The 2026 football season is rapidly approaching and, no surprise, the Duke Blue Devils are receiving little to no respect in preseason polls and articles.
The ACC media preseason poll predicts Duke will finish 10th out of 17 teams. ESPN analytics predict Duke will win only five of 12 games. It is time for our Blue Devils to outperform the talking heads once again.
Once again? Yes.
In 2025, Duke was predicted to finish 6th but ended the regular season in a tie for 2nd and won the ACC Conference Championship
Game (ACCCG), beating Virginia 27-20 in overtime to become conference champions. The media underestimated Duke in previous years as well, but no need to go through the list.
Duke enters the 2026 season riding a four-game winning streak with wins over North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia (ACCCG), and Arizona State (Sun Bowl), to close out the 2025 season. The Blue Devils have qualified for a bowl game the past four seasons, and are looking to extend the streak to five bowl eligible seasons in a row.
What is Duke’s ceiling in 2026? Is it six wins and a trip to a fifth straight bowl game? Is it a return trip to Charlotte with a chance to repeat as ACC Champions? Is qualifying for the College Football Playoff in the cards? Let’s take a look at the schedule.
There are multiple ways to break down the upcoming season. Looking at home games versus away games is a conventional method. Looking month-by-month, seeing as Duke plays four games each in September, October and November, is convenient. Splitting the season into before the bye week and after the bye week works some seasons but is less appealing in 2026 due to Duke’s bye week falling after the fourth game of the season.
Whichever method you use, it’s obvious that Duke needs to win early, and win at home. Most of Duke’s tougher opponents, based on preseason expectations, are on the backside of the schedule (Illinois in Game 2 being the exception). and most of the tougher opponents are played on the road (Clemson in Game 11 being the exception).
Winning the games you’re supposed to win is paramount to success, regardless of how success is defined (I’ll explain how I define success toward the end of the article).
Using the home games versus away games methodology here is how I see the season unfolding.
Home Games: Tulane, Stanford, William & Mary, North Carolina, Boston College, Clemson.
Winning five of six home games is achievable, but of course the objective is to win all six. Duke took a step back in 2025 with a 3-3 record at Wallace Wade Stadium, with losses to #11 Illinois, #12 Georgia Tech, and #20 Virginia. However, in the three seasons between 2022 – 2024 Duke compiled a 16-3 record at home.
The three losses were to #22 SMU by one point in overtime, #11 Notre Dame by a touchdown, and North Carolina by a field goal. The Blue Devils must defend home turf in 2026 to win five games, or four games at an absolute minimum.
Which home games should Duke fans circle on the schedule? Start with Tulane on September 5 because it is the first game, and sets the tone for the season. Next, circle the game against North Carolina on October 17 because, well… because.
Finally, circle Clemson on Friday night, November 20. Duke holds a two game winning streak against the Tigers, so no reason not to make it three in a row.
Away Games: Illinois, Georgia Tech, Virginia, N.C. State, Miami, Wake Forest.
Based on preseason expectations, Miami in Game 10 is Duke’s toughest opponent in 2026; however, the trip to Boca Raton will be emotional due to the Darian Mensah/Cooper Barkate situation (both played for Duke last season, but are now at Miami. The Mensah situation, in particular). Can Duke pull off a huge road upset?
Illinois in Game 2 is a big early season road test. Duke self-destructed against Illinois last season with five turnovers plus a penalty on an Illinois punt that allowed the Illini to extend a possession.
The other four games at Georgia Tech, Virginia, N.C. State and Wake Forest are toss-ups. Duke needs to win three of four to go 3-3 on the road, at a minimum.
Which road games should Duke fans circle on the schedule? Start with Illinois on September 12. An upset in Champaign would be a huge early season statement. Next, circle all the toss-up games because we need to win seventy-five percent of them if not 100 percent.
Five wins at home and three on the road would result in an 8-4 overall record, 6-3 in the ACC. Beat Clemson at home, or pull off the big upset at Miami or go 4-0 in the four road toss-up games, and the record improves to 9-3 (7-2) and a possible return trip to the ACC Championship Game.
To reiterate, winning the games you’re supposed to win is priority number one. The impact of pulling off an upset in Champaign or over Clemson is negated by a loss in a game the team is favored to win.
Now, let’s define success. As a long-suffering Blue Devils football fan, I attended my first game at Duke Stadium in October 1966. It’s easy to say six wins and a trip to a fifth consecutive bowl game is success. However, times are changing and they are changing for the better, so my definition of success in 2026 is 8-4 and being competitive down the stretch for a berth in the ACC Championship Game on December 5. Duke might not make it back to Charlotte, but they need to be in the conversation.
I will put the over/under on Duke wins at 7.5 and take the over.
