It’s been a pleasure to see the progression of Dayot Upamecano at Bayern Munich ever since he made his move from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, the same summer that Julian Nagelsmann became manager. Like most of the player’s in Bayern’s current squad, he’s played under several different managers in Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, and Vincent Kompany, but has quite arguably reached his peak form under Kompany as Bayern’s still in the hunt for Champions League and DFB-Pokal titles after securing their
35th Bundesliga title just two weeks ago via a 4-2 win over VfB Stuttgart.
In Kompany, Upamecano has been able to learn and take guidance from one of the world’s best center-backs that’s absolutely no stranger to winning major silverware from his time with Manchester City and it’s shone through with the French center back’s performances on the pitch for both Bayern and France. What was once a rocky start to life at Bayern riddled with inconsistent performances has now become a KEY piece in the backline alongside Jonathan Tah in the German Rekordmeister’s defensive line.
Upamecano recently made a point of expressing how much he enjoys working under Kompany and how much he’s able to give the center back having played that position himself. “He brings me so much, especially his vision as a defender. He was one of the best defenders of his generation. He’s a role model for me. It’s incredible to have him as a coach, I’m making progress and I’m very happy to be working with him,” Upamecano enthused (via @iMiaSanMia).
Many Bayern fans will remember a mistake-prone, nervy center back during the beginning of his tenure in Munich, but Upamecano has become one of the first names of Kompany’s team sheets ever since he’s been manager of the club, for good reason. Without discredting Nagelsmann and Tuchel, Kompany seems to be one of the best things that’s happened to Upamecano.
