Hamburger SV could be preparing for a remarkable reunion with one of the most decorated defenders in recent Bundesliga history.
According to Bild (as captured by Tz), HSV is internally considering a move for former Bayern Munich star David Alaba as the club urgently searches for defensive reinforcements following a disastrous start to the season. Alaba’s name has reportedly been explicitly discussed within the club as HSV looks for a solution to its defensive problems.
The 34-year-old Austrian is currently
a free agent after his contract with Real Madrid expired, meaning HSV could theoretically register him despite the summer transfer window already being closed. That makes Alaba an intriguing option for a club that clearly believes something needs to change at the back.
For HSV, the appeal is obvious. Alaba brings an enormous amount of experience at the highest level after spending more than a decade at Bayern Munich before moving to Real Madrid. During his time in Munich, he established himself as a key figure in one of Europe’s most dominant teams, winning numerous Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.
His move to Madrid continued that success, although injuries have increasingly complicated the latter stages of his career. The question for HSV would therefore be whether Alaba can still provide enough consistency and fitness to make an immediate impact. Alaba is not the only experienced defender reportedly being considered. Bild also names Danish center-back Jannik Vestergaard as a potential candidate.
HSV desperately needs stability, and adding a veteran with Alaba’s pedigree would certainly qualify as a statement move. Whether there is anything more than internal consideration remains to be seen, but the idea of Alaba returning to Germany in HSV colors would be one of the more unexpected Bundesliga stories of the season.
