Following recent reports of an April fight between Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora nearing the finish line, Chisora joins talkSPORT to discuss the ongoing negotiations, why he thinks it would make for a great event, and why he believes Wilder will show up in better form than we’ve see from him as of late. Check out some excerpts of what Chisora had to say below.
Chisora on if he’ll be facing Wilder next
“That’s the rumor right now, so we’ll see…That’s what I’ve been hearing so I’m just waiting to get a phone call to make it happen…Listen,
I’ll fight anybody. All I need is a good contract. The reason why we didn’t fight in December is I didn’t get a good contract, so I didn’t fight in December. So right now I’m just waiting on getting a good contract, a good number, and I’ll fight.
“Me and Deontay Wilder will be amazing at Tottenham…So that’s the idea.”
On this fight potentially leading towards an Usyk fight later this year
“Listen, if the fight with Deontay happens and the winner will fight Usyk, that’ll be amazing. And right now I’m hearing Usyk is fighting [Andy Ruiz] in Vegas. That’s what I’m hearing right now.”
On his mentality as he looks at that fight
“I just train to my ability knowing that the guy in front of me, for him to win fight he has to knock me out, like proper lights out. So if he can’t do that in Round 10 or 12, I’m going to eat him up. That’s how I train…I like to fight, I like pain, I like everything. So if the fight does happen, let me explain something to you fellas, Deontay’s going to get laid out.”
On if he thinks Wilder is just a shell of his former self at this point
“No. Listen, he went through some stuff with his ex-wife, he even wrote a song for his ex-wife, and then suddenly that song became #1. And then, you know when you go through a divorce, and you go through how painful a situation and you’re still fighting, it kind of takes that venom away from everything you’re doing. And now the guy I speak to sometimes is back on track now.“
