After several outlets reported it Monday, Alabama has officially announced Ty Simpson as its starting quarterback vs. Florida State.
The senior spoke about earning the nod on Tuesday, calling it “surreal” — from WBMA:
“It’s a dream come true,” Simpson said after practice Tuesday. “I came here out of high school wanting to be the starting quarterback. I am just excited. I can’t thank my teammates enough for making me look good. I’m ready for the opportunity.”
“Ty did
a really nice job of taking care of the football, number one,” Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said when explaining why Simpson was named the starter.” I think Ty is an incredible playmaker on the move, and I think from there, guys like that just, you worry about whether they’re going to be able to train themselves to take care of the football. In the room, in general Ty led that charge. Ty didn’t throw any picks last week, he’s thrown one all camp. We’ve thrown like four total this camp and this spring I think at this time we’d thrown like 15. I think in general guys are seeing the concepts and controlling the offense a lot better as a room, and Ty was the best at that. His ability to command and create out of the pocket I thought was the best. He’s made great decisions. He’s just much cleaner on some of the things you expect an older quarterback to do.”

In a lot of ways, this was expected. Simpson has been considered the frontrunner for the job since January, and the coaches have done nothing but reiterate that he remained in front. Still, the competition was open, and the common sentiment was that the staff hoped to have a decision by next week.
That this seemed to happen a week early is hard to see as anything but a good thing. Simpson apparently took command during the first scrimmage over the weekend and made it impossible not to name him the starter. With that out of the way, the team can now fully focus on building reps and chemistry with the starting group together an extra week before they go into game-planning for Florida State.
Simpson’s start in Tallahassee will be his first for the Crimson Tide, having spent his whole career in Tuscaloosa. He came off the bench for Alabama in 2023 vs. South Florida, helping the team escape Tampa with a 17-3 win.
FanDuel currently has the spread for the game at 13.5 points in Alabama’s favor, with the over/under set at 50.5.
