Geno Smith executed consistently and they dominated in the trenches, shutting down the Titans’ offense while cruising in a game that could have been much more lopsided than the 23-10 final score indicated. Sadiq had only four touches (three receptions and one rush), but he scored one of the Jets’ two touchdowns (on a 3-yard end-around), and his versatility enabled OC Frank Reich to use creative personnel packages. After missing most of training camp because of a hernia, the No. 16 pick was limited to 26 offensive snaps, but his role will continue to grow. Sadiq joined Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome as the only two tight ends in history to score a rushing TD in his first career game. — Rich Cimini

What we learned: They’re not bottom-feeders
In recent years, the only debate regarding the Jets in rankings like these was how far down to place them. But they showed they’re a better team than the Titans, which had to feel good against former Jets coach Robert Saleh, thanks to a strong running game and an efficient afternoon from new quarterback Geno Smith.

We’ll likely look back at the Jets’ Week 1 win and realize the Titans really are that bad. However, allowing 195 yards to any NFL team is impressive. The Jets gained 367 yards and generally looked sharp in all ways on offense. Head coach Aaron Glenn needs to show improvement this season and he’s off to a great start, even if it was against Tennessee.

This week: vs. PackersSpeaking of the Titans, I’ll understand the frustration that a win over Tennessee got the Jets a smaller bump than a Giants win over Dallas. David Bailey showed the foundation of what can be a good high-motor pass rusher. Sunday’s game against the suspect Packers offensive line should offer Bailey a few more chances to get at the passer—and a better indication of what we’re actually looking at in Florham Park.
It clearly will take more than a win over the lowly Titans to improve perceptions of the Jets, but an upset win over the Packers in Week 2 likely will lead to a genuine rise.
