Bayern Munich secured their first piece of silverware of the season by beating VfB Stuttgart 2-1 at the MHP-Arena in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on the heels of goals from Harry Kane and new signing Luis Díaz. Jamie Leweling’s stoppage time goal for Stuttgart in the second half was nothing more than a mere consolation for the Swabians and images of a dejected Nick Woltemade watching Bayern lift the trophy made their rounds on social media as the striker’s transfer saga reached a dead end along
with the match.
The victory for Bayern temporarily quelled looming frustrations for a lack of further activity in the transfer market. The long-term injuries to Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito and Jamal Musiala certainly skew the optics of Bayern’s summer window thus far, especially with all of Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller and most recently Paul Wanner having all left the club and only Díaz joining in the attacking ranks. Kane himself has called this “one of the smallest squads” he’s been a part of.
Despite what may or may not still happen in the transfer window, though, Kane wants Bayern to focus and be able to carry the momentum from the cup win over Stuttgart into the start of the Bundesliga season. A difficult test against RB Leipzig lies in wait for the German Rekordmeister on the opening night of the 2025/26 season.
“The win over Stuttgart in the Super Cup was a big step in the right direction. We’re gonna have to do the same on Friday. We’re looking forward to the game,” the England skipper explained at the club’s traditional Paulaner photoshoot ahead of the official Oktoberfest season in Bavaria (via @iMiaSanMia).
Recent meetings between Bayern and Leipzig have packed their fair share of drama and the 3-3 draw back in May — featuring a 94th minute equalizer from Yussuf Poulsen — slightly delayed Bayern from being able to celebrate the Bundesliga title.
For Kane, this will be his third attempt at being able to score on the opening match week of the Bundesliga season, as he scored in his first ever league match for Bayern in the 4-0 win at Werder Bremen back in August of 2023. Last season in Bayern’s 3-2 season-opening win against VfL Wolfsburg, Kane didn’t find the back of the net himself, but he helped set up the second and third goals, helping guide Vincent Kompany to a winning start in his maiden season as Bayern manager.
