The Yankees are sitting in the top Wild Card spot entering play on Friday, owners of the second-best record in the AL at 57-45 and just two games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East. Claiming that top spot is vital to enabling a deep run in the postseason, as they themselves witnessed back in 2024 when they last won the East and this past season, when the Blue Jays narrowly surpassed them (twice) and went on a run to the World Series. They haven’t been able to get fully over
the hump though, as a terrible end of June/start of July run saw them sink into the doldrums of the June Swoon once more and left all of their flaws on display.
New York has reinforcements waiting near the finish line, but they have to make sure that the race is still competitive before they can worry about that final stretch with Aaron Judge and company back in the mix. And with just 10 days remaining until the MLB Trade Deadline on August 3rd, the time to put their chips on the table is growing ever closer. The hot stove is finally heating up, and there’s been plenty of speculation about players the Yankees could be interested in or who would be a good fit if they can afford them, but at the end of the day what does an ideal deadline look for Brian Cashman? Is an overhaul needed, would a simple retooling get the job done, or can it all get fixed with one big trade? We’ve been methodically working through teams that could link up with the Yankees for a deal and individual players to target, but it’s time to talk about what the overall haul could be to revamp this team and put their best foot forward heading into the dog days of summer.
Let’s start with one of the sorest points of the roster, and a main culprit for the offense’s boom-or-bust nature: catcher. Typically teams can live with their catchers not being the most offensively gifted part of the lineup, but the Yankees have pushed that to the extreme this year (despite some gifted defenders). Austin Wells has regressed down to an unwatchable at-bat whenever it’s his turn in the order, hitting for an absurdly low 50 wRC+ with just six home runs and 20 RBI on the season in 70 games. The Yankees’ options behind Wells haven’t been promising either, as J.C. Escarra has been a classic Quad-A bat crushing in Scranton but flailing about in the majors while Ali Sánchez has been similarly ineffective in his small sample size. The Yankees are looking for a right-handed catcher to platoon with Wells, and the only reason they aren’t outright looking to replace him this season is because installing a new full-time catcher with the pitching staff is going to be a lot of work with a very small window of time.
However, that doesn’t mean they can’t go and get a catcher that could slide into the starter’s role for next season while taking the lion’s share of the starts now. There are a couple of options here, two of which would be more long-term investments. Ryan Jeffers has been the name first and foremost associated with the team and would be a pure rental coming over from Minnesota, but he’d be the biggest immediate improvement to the lineup with his 159 wRC+. Injuries have limited Jeffers to just 44 games played this year, and there’s a bit of a history with not being available for the full season throughout his career, but the Yankees would only need him for this stretch run and he’s looked well-adjusted since returning, collecting a hit in all but one game he’s played since July 10th. If they wanted to get a new franchise catcher, then Shea Langeliers or Hunter Goodman come into play. Both have plus-power and are above-average bats overall, but neither would come cheap as they’re under team control until 2029 and 2030, respectively. The Athletics are reportedly open to dealing Langeliers as their season has gone underwater and they haven’t been able to come to terms on an extension, but Goodman would take further convincing as Colorado sees him as a cornerstone to rebuild with.
With a trio of big names on the market to varying extents, it really only matters that the Yankees land one of them. Personally, I think the middle(-ish) ground approach of pursuing Langeliers is the most appealing — he’s going to be under contract for multiple years beyond 2026 still, but with one less year of control than Goodman the pool of prospects that New York would have to send out becomes slightly less daunting and frees them up to make other big-name deals. To be clear, Langeliers has been one of the league’s best backstops for two years now and it’s not as though he would be cheap; this is just a point of comparison. Regardless, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them take the simple approach and get Jeffers for this year alone if the price is right, but I think Wells’ time as the starting catcher has come and gone and would prefer having an answer there instead of a question mark once the winter arrives.
Then comes the relievers, another area of concern for most of the season. While the top end of the bullpen has solidified itself with David Bednar and Paul Blackburn forming a dynamic duo with Fernando Cruz still in the mix, the middle relief has remained exhausting for the Yankees. Camilo Doval was one of the big gets last deadline, but he’s been rather unpredictable throughout his Yankees tenure despite what metrics have continually deemed as elite stuff. The past couple weeks have indicated that he’s no longer trusted by even the player-friendly Aaron Boone. Jake Bird has been the more traditional kind of disappointing, getting stashed away as soon as he got to New York because he faced several blowups immediately and saw more of the same this season. On top of that, Tim Hill’s time as the crafty lefty coming out of the ‘pen has taken a turn for the worse in 2026 and is no longer the automatic matchup that Aaron Boone can comfortably deploy. Swapping out all three of them is unlikely (though Bird is at least now back at Triple-A), but the team will aim for one or two arms to bring into the fold and there’s a few that would really make a difference.
The prize of the bunch is undoubtedly Mason Miller, and we must spend a moment talking about what an upgrade he would make. Rarely would I argue that trading for a big name reliever is worth the cost, but this is a scenario where it would — Miller is both the best reliever in the game and still under team control through 2029, and the Padres might be in a desperate position where they simply have to trade him. He’s a luxury good on a team stuck in the mud with several terrible contracts weighing them down, and while they won’t get a haul as good as the one they gave up for Miller in the first place last year they have to try and recoup some of it. If the Yankees can line up a deal that doesn’t involve their top prospect George Lombard Jr. (more on him in a second), then I think they have to pull the trigger. If getting Miller means settling for Jeffers over getting a more stable solution at catcher, I think that’s worth it as well because he can form one of the most untouchable bullpens the team has seen and he’ll be around for several postseasons. Miller has also proven that he’s a grade above most elite closers when it comes to longevity, shining for far more than just a season or two.
Of course, all of this is ample reasoning for the Padres to ask for as much as they can get for him, and the Yankees could easily be outbid. If that’s the case, then San Diego can still offer a solid addition in Adrian Morejon, their second-best reliever. Morejon would give the Yankees an upgrade over Hill as their primary left-handed reliever, but he can handle much more than just lefty-on-lefty matchups as he’s pitched in 54 innings already this season. Going hard for one of the Padres’ relievers would be the best case scenario, and if the team somehow manages to walk away with Miller than you could turn to a rental like A.J. Minter from the Mets for a lefty. Should they land Morejon instead, Antonio Senzatela would be a great right-handed rental with a team option for 2027 should they want to keep him around.
Finally, there’s one interal option that could shake things up for New York. Lombard is the organization’s top prospect and is drawing top 10 prospect rankings in all of baseball after a sensational rise over the last year-plus. It’s going to be hard to hold his name out of a lot of the trade discussions we just went over, but there’s one good reason to do so — he can impact the team this season. If the Yankees are confident in him, and there’s a lot of signs that they are with how aggressively they’ve already promoted him through the system — then they can gamble on him making a difference here and now over starting José Caballero or Anthony Volpe at shortstop. The team has fallen a bit out of favor with both of the latter options, viewing Caballero as a guy who stepped in admirably when the hole at short opened but is better suited to play as the utilityman they originally envisioned him being while Volpe’s track record with the org has finally wrung itself out.
Lombard is perhaps the best prospect they’ve had since Aaron Judge moved through the system in 2016, but with the Captain in the end of his prime years, bold moves have to be made. Lombard can either contribute here and now to a championship contender or get shipped out for a player who will, and I think there’s room to improve around the roster while still holding onto him for a promotion. It may not come before the deadline, but it will need to come soon if the Yankees do hold onto him and plan to use him at all in 2026.
