Bayern Munich were within touching distance of reaching last season’s Champions League final at the Allianz Arena, but after two blisteringly exi]citing semifinals legs against Paris Saint-Germain, the Ligue 1 giants edged out the German Rekordmeister 6-5 on aggregate and went on to beat Arsenal in the final. Vincent Kompany very nearly replicated the treble Bayern secured under Hansi Flick in the 2019/20 season that was partially disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, but fell just short in the Champions League.
With the way Bayern has been playing all season and the positive brand of football they had been exhibiting, it would have been a fitting end for them to have lifted the Champions League title, but there’s continued belief that they can do so this season. Kompany has said the goal is always to take another step forward from the previous season, and it’s difficult to improve drastically from what was such a dominant domestic season, but the Champions League is that next step.
With similar form to what the club showed last season, combined with some luck in their favor, club president Herbert Hainer echoed Kompany’s sentiment and said he feels Bayern has what it takes to do just as good as they did last season, but also win the Champions League. “Of course, we also want to win the Champions League. Vinnie made that very clear in Asia. I’m convinced we’re capable of that. But for that, you also need that little bit of luck in addition to sporting quality. If you think back, in 2012 we were by far the better team and lost. In 2013 we won. That could have turned out differently,” Hainer told Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), making reference to previous finals Bayern has played in; it’s not always about just being the better team on any given night.
Bayern will have to wait until the end of the month to find out who their league phase opponents will be in the Champions League, but they have the smaller matter of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund to tackle beforehand on he 22nd.
