New Orleans Saints wide receiver Bub Means is once again dealing with a lower-body injury during the early stages of the offseason program. While the team has taken a cautious approach with injured players ahead of training camp, another setback comes at an unfortunate time for Means.
The competition at wide receiver has only intensified, as Chris Olave remains the clear leader of the group, while rookie Jordyn Tyson is expected to have a significant role. Devaughn Vele has already generated buzz
since arriving in New Orleans and strong end to the season, while fourth-round pick Bryce Lance has been impressive throughout OTAs. Sixth-round pick Barrion Brown also brings elite speed to the room, and Mason Tipton has already earned valuable experience within the system.
That leaves Means with little margin for error. Availability is often just as important as ability, especially for players competing for roster spots. If Means enters training camp healthy, he’ll still have an opportunity to prove he belongs. But another injury has put him behind several receivers who have spent the spring building momentum towards their own case.
Training camp may not officially decide Means’ future with the Saints, but it could very well be his best, and perhaps last, opportunity to carve out a long-term role in New Orleans.
