Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 2, Memphis Redbirds (STL) 1
Christian Herberholz pitched 4.1 innings with just one run allowed. That run scored in the top of the first on back-to-back hits, a single and a double. He had just one 1-2-3 inning but prevented any further damage. He exited the game with one out in the fifth inning and a runner on first. He allowed five hits total, one walk, and struck out five.
Kyle Nicolas got the last two outs of the fifth and picked up the win. Rehabbing Ryan Helsley faced three batters and retired all three with two strikeouts.
Both Norfolk runs scored in the second inning. Luis Vázquez and Ryan Noda singled ahead of Chadwick Tromp. Tromp doubled in one run, and the second came in on a groundout. The Tides had six total hits and Tromp had two of those. Enrique Bradfield, Jr and Creed Willems were both hitless, though Willems picked up a walk. Heston Kjerstad singled and struck out four times.
Double-A: Altoona Curve (PIT) 4, Chesapeake Baysox 1
Evan Yates started for the Baysox and struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks. The Curve scored once in the third on an RBI double from Duce Gourson. They added on three more in the fifth thanks to four hits, including another double for Gourson. If this were a Pirates website, I would be heaping praise on Gourson, who also walked in the game.
The Baysox didn’t score their lone run until the eighth inning. Fernando Peguero walked, moved up on a passed ball, and scored on a single from Griff O’Farrall. The team had just six hits, including one by Aron Estrada. Ethan Anderson went hitless.
High-A: Frederick Keys 5, Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 4 – F/10
The Keys outhit the Cyclones, 12-4, and the Cyclones made four errors in the game. Yet it still took the Keys 10 innings to get the win. Going 2-for-16 with RISP will do that.
JT Quinn started and had a very good game. He pitched six innings with just one run allowed. He gave up two hits and two walks. The only run against him scored on a home run. He only struck out two. Six innings is a season high
The Cyclones scored off the relief pitches in the eighth and ninth innings to send the game to extras. The Baysox did not stage any big rallies, but rather scored one run in each of the first, fourth, seventh, ninth, and tenth innings. Wehiwa Aloy had two singles and a double, but Ike Irish was hitless. RJ Austin had two hits as the leadoff batter. Victor Figueroa and Elis Cuevas also had two hits. Cuevas got the game-winning hit in the 10th.
Low-A: Columbia Fireflies (KCR) 9, Delmarva Shorebirds 6
Starter Denton Biller and his relief, Luis Beltrán, both had very bad nights. Biller gave up five runs in three innings, with two home runs allowed. Beltrán started the fourth but only got two outs. He gave up four runs of his own on three hits and two walks.
The Shorebirds had three two-run innings, with a big day from Jordan Sanchez. Sanchez singled, homered, and knocked in three runs. Jose Perez also homered and had two hits, plus a walk. Stiven Martinez singled and walked.
