Newcastle United enters Saturday’s trip to Fulham under mounting pressure after losing four of its past five matches in all competitions, with frustration growing among supporters following Monday’s 1-0 home defeat to Everton.
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported that Newcastle’s hierarchy is not considering replacing Matthias Jaissle and is instead actively looking to support the head coach through the current downturn.
“There has been significant introspection following Monday’s insipid 1-0 home defeat
to Everton and harsh truths have been shared during meetings involving Jaissle, staff, players and officials at their Benton training ground, but the club are rallying behind Eddie Howe’s successor and his position is not under immediate threat,” Waugh wrote.
Waugh added that CEO David Hopkinson, sporting director Ross Wilson and performance director James Bunce remain behind Jaissle. All three played significant roles in appointing the 38-year-old after Newcastle paid around €10 million to release him from Al-Ahli.
The backing does not mean Newcastle is satisfied. The club sits 13th, four points above the relegation places, has lost four of its past six Premier League games and has managed only five shots on target across its last three league matches.
“Unwavering backing of Jaissle remains and that is not likely to change in the short term,” Waugh reported, although he added that support “will not be indefinite should progress fail to arrive.”
Jaissle also said Thursday that he had felt renewed support internally during a difficult week.
“That just shows me that everyone believes in the long-term project and that everyone is also aware and realistic about the journey and where we are right now,” he said.
For now, Newcastle is choosing patience over another managerial change, but results will ultimately determine how long that position remains sustainable.
Should Newcastle continue backing Jaissle through the transition, or has the team already shown enough warning signs to justify a rethink? Share your thoughts in the comments.
