Atletico Madrid are exploring a move for Nick Woltemade amid uncertainty over his future at Newcastle United.
“Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade is reportedly unhappy at the club, and Atletico Madrid can provide an escape route for him,” Bild reported on May 13, via Football Today.
The report suggests the striker could be open to leaving after a difficult first season.
“He might be looking for a new stomping ground after just one year, and Atletico are still interested in signing him,” the report
says. “Atletico Madrid reportedly tried to sign him from Stuttgart, but he chose to move to Newcastle rather than Spain.”
Changes in Atletico’s squad could create an opening for a move, and Woltemade’s uncertainty under manager Eddie Howe could pave the way for his exit as soon as this summer.
“They are preparing to lose one or more strikers this summer,” the report says. “These openings could force Atletico into the market for multiple forwards, and Woltemade is one of the names on their radar,” the report adds.
Any potential move would depend on how Newcastle assess the striker’s role moving forward, as his first season has raised questions about his long-term fit at the club.
Howe is set to stay in the Magpies’ touchline, and if the gaffer isn’t about to change his mind or plans for Woltemade, it’s fair to assume the Germany international could at the very least consider moving elsewhere and play instead of rotting on Tyneside’s bench.
