Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Lamont Roach will square off for an interim super lightweight title on December 6 in San Antonio, ESPN reports, confirming rumors from a few weeks back.
Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KO) and Roach (25-1-2, 10 KO) will fight for the interim WBA belt at 140 lbs. Roach is still, officially, the reigning WBA titleholder at 130 lbs, which comes after he fought Gervonta “Tank” Davis at 135 for Tank’s lightweight WBA title in March, going to a draw in a bout where many felt Roach deserved the upset
victory.
Davis claimed he wanted to do the rematch, even saying he was hoping to get it done with a quick turnaround for the summer, but instead never made the deal and will have a novelty exhibition bout with Jake Paul on November 14.
Instead of defending his belt at 130 or seeking an interim WBA fight at 135, the 30-year-old Roach will try his hand at 140. Cruz, 27, has had his last four bouts at 140 lbs, but he is very small for the weight. Cruz last fought on July 19, beating Omar Salcido to win the interim WBC title.
