Didi Hamann believes there is a simple benchmark for players and coaches who want to become part of Bayern Munich folklore: winning the Champions League.
Speaking about Vincent Kompany and Harry Kane, Hamann argued that domestic success alone is no longer enough for a club with Bayern Munich’s expectations.
“If you want to go down in history and folklore, and I was asked about Harry Kane the other day, you have to remember that when you play for Bayern Munich, you need to win the Champions League.
They won it for the first time in six or seven years recently, but the Champions League is the trophy they truly want. You can’t force it, but they’ve consistently had a squad capable of challenging for it,” Hamann told Andy’s Bet Club.
That expectation comes from Bayern Munich’s dominance in Germany. Winning the Bundesliga has become almost routine, meaning the Champions League represents the ultimate test for Kompany and his squad.
“They’ve won the Bundesliga almost every year for the past 15 years, winning the league is almost expected because they’re so far ahead of everyone else, but the Champions League is the main objective,” Hamann noted.
Hamann also believes Bayern Munich are particularly motivated to reclaim European glory because of the circumstances surrounding their most recent Champions League triumph.
“It’s the trophy they want to reclaim, especially since their last win during COVID, which many feel had an asterisk because the English teams didn’t really feature,” stated Hamann.
The message is clear — another Bundesliga title would be an achievement, but it would not define this Bayern Munich team.
“Winning the league, as daft as it may sound, is just not enough because they are so far above everybody else. They’ll probably win it again this season. The Champions League will be the trophy they try to bring back,” Hamann said.
For Kane and Kompany, that is the challenge.
If they want to go down in Bayern Munich folklore, Europe is where they need to make their mark.
