As soon as we know it, the NFL trade deadline will be here, and the rumors will have been running rampant for weeks regarding who the Buffalo Bills might acquire via trade.
To adequately prepare you for every possibility on this front, I’m launching a series that will profile all the potential Bills trade candidates ahead of the deadline. With the Week 7 bye approaching for the Bills, this is the perfect time to start this series. I’ll sprinkle these templated profiles onto the site up until the actual
trade deadline until November 10, which is 21 day from now, and lands after Week 9.
First up, Chargers safety Derwin James.
Age: 30
He’s been a first-team All-Pro twice — after the 2018 (as a safety) and 2021 seasons — and a second-team All-Pro four times — after the 2018 season (as a defensive back), in 2022, 2024, and 2025.
In short, he’s long been viewed as arguably the best strong safety / slot corner hybrid in the NFL.
Ironically, James has not played since Week 3’s loss in Orchard Park. He’s dealing with a hamstring issue.
What’s noteworthy about his start to 2026 — James had the highest missed tackle rate (16.7%) of his career, and throws in his coverage vicinity have netted a passer rating of 126.9, the highest rating he’s surrendered on those throws in a season as a professional.
James is still one of the most physically imposing, genuinely versatile safeties in football. The first three games of this season have indicated he’s started to decline. Although the entire Chargers defense has struggled mightily in the club’s 0-6 start.
2026 snap splits
Box: 37.3%
Slot corner: 36.7%
Free safety: 15.5%
Defensive line: 9.3%
Wide corner: 1%
How he’d fit with Bills
James’ presence in Buffalo’s lineup would create a ripple effect in the safety room, because of the type of safety he is. Entering the bye, Cole Bishop has played close to half of his snaps in the box and has spent a fourth of the time at free safety.
Because of that there’d need to be some responsibility change and pre-snap alignment deviation for either him or Bishop. I’d guess James would likely move into a more predominant slot corner role, to deal with larger receivers in that position or tight ends deployed there.
Financial obligation for Bills to trade for him
2026 salary: $11.5M
If the Bills trade for James after Week 9, they’d be on the hook for $5.75M in prorated base salary. His 2027 salary is $17.5M (fully guaranteed), and in 2028 it’s set to be $24.6M.
Remember though, upon acquiring any player via trade, the new team can agree to a completely different contract with the player. That’d likely be the route Buffalo would like to follow if James was added.
Projected cost to acquire
Using Syndicate32.com’s trade machine, given the Chargers venturing into a fire-sale situation, the projected cost to trade for James is a 2027 Round 2 pick.
Even that feels a little high given his age and slow start to 2026. His current injury doesn’t exactly elevate his trade value either.
Should the Bills trade for Derwin James?
I respect the hell out of what James has brought to the field for the entirety of his NFL career. I was flabbergasted on draft night 2018 when he wasn’t selected until pick No. 17, and he’s been a downright stud in a truly hybrid role over the past eight-plus seasons now.
Even if the draft-pick compensation to acquire James is less than a second-rounder, this fit doesn’t feel right to me. Sure, an argument could be made that the Bills defense simply needs more talented players on it, and James is undoubtedly a freaky specimen.
However, Cole Bishop hasn’t been spectacular, he is locked into the strong-safety/blitzer/slot defender role AND maybe just as importantly, Buffalo has two young, reasonably large safeties behind him who may very well start to see the field sooner than later in Jalon Kilgore and second-year pro Jordan Hancock. I’m high on both of them as they grow in this defense in a James-like role.
If James was playing in 2026 on an expiring contract, had a tiny base salary, or little-to-no future guaranteed dollars left on his deal, I could be persuaded here. None of those financial components are true. And as a reigning All-Pro, I doubt James would agree to ripping up his current Chargers deal and signing a cheap contract in Buffalo. I wouldn’t blame him for refusing to do that.
For as fun of a player as James is, even at 30, I’m out on this trade candidate for the Bills.
What do you think?
