Arsenal travel to Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent to face Port Vale in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The two clubs have met 22 times in their history, but 18 of those contests came before World War I. Most recently, the club met in 1998 — Arsenal advanced from a penalty shootout after the clubs drew both the initial tie and replay in the FA Cup. The Gunners should cruise through to the next round, but there’s always the magic of the cup to contend with. A glamour club away in a smaller ground to a League
One side — the football gods are giving this one the side-eye, at the very least.
Port Vale beat Birmingham, who are in the Championship, in the previous round, giving a tough start to the season a bit of a spark. They’d obviously love to keep it going, and they’ve won two on the bounce after dropping five matches (along with a draw) to open the League One season. The Valliants are comfortable playing without the ball. They are well-drilled defensively and look to hit on the counter. They’ll need to play that script perfectly to get a result against the Gunners.
Arsenal will be heavily rotated from the side that faced Manchester City at the weekend. The Gunners travel to Newcastle and will want to be fresh and ready for another difficult Premier League test. That’s not to say they will overlook Port Vale, though. Everybody at the club keenly feels the “need” to win silverware. They’re not going to throw one away by punting the League Cup.
Noni Madueke is out for up to two months with a knee injury sustained against Manchester City. Piero Hincapie misses out with the same groin problem that kept him out at the weekend. Martin Ødegaard is still dealing with his shoulder injury. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are out, as expected.
