The New England Patriots toned down the tempo on Wednesday. Coming off five practices in full pads, they went to bucket hats and T-shirts instead — an attire that reflected the intensity: the Patriots’ 10th session of training camp was a walkthrough.
To recap the action, please check out our practice recap. In the meantime, here is who caught our eyes for better or worse.
Standout of the day
N/A: Unlike the last few days, the focus on Wednesday was not on competition. We did get a look at the depth chart and where the camp
competitions currently stand, but the nature of the session prevents us from crowning a standout of the day.
Other performances of note
RB Terrell Jennings: After returning from the non-football injury list earlier this week, Jennings has been used quite prominently. On Wednesday, he was with the starting offense alongside Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson — an honor not reserved for any of the other backup RBs — and also lined up with the top kickoff return unit and the top punt block squad. The third-year man appears to be carving out an advantage in the race for the third running back spot.
WR Efton Chism III: With Romeo Doubs missing the session, the Patriots had an opening in their starting lineup. It went to sophomore Efton Chism, whose ability to line up all over the formation has made him a valuable presence in the wide receiver room. Chism was with the starting wide receiver group during the first period of 11-on-11s and often was on the field in Doubs’ place alongside A.J. Brown and DeMario Douglas. It will be seen how his role evolved once Doubs is back, but his usage on Wednesday was definitively noteworthy.
WR Kyle Williams: Even with Romeo Doubs absent, Kyle Williams was not among the group of wideouts repping with Drake Maye and the starters during the aforementioned 11-on-11s. He did join the top unit later, but did not line up against the starting defense. What he did do, however, was lining up as the first-unit kickoff returner alongside Terrell Jennings. The more you can do.
CB Channing Canada and CB Karon Prunty: When the Patriots split into 11-on-11 work, the rookie pair was among the five cornerbacks to work with the defensive starters; Christian Gonzalez, Charles Woods and Marcus Jones were also part of the group. Both youngsters took the field behind Woods, the current CB4 and a top-level perimeter player with Carlton Davis still out, and are perhaps in the process elevating themselves beyond the other backups at the position.
S Dell Pettus and S Mike Brown: The fight for the third safety spot saw Pettus and main competitor Mike Brown on different fields Wednesday. Whereas Pettus was with the first-teamers on defense, Brown was with the second unit. Both also served as the personal punt protectors, with Brown the top option at the position and Pettus — who filled that role during his 2024 rookie season — serving as the No. 2.
The Patriots will hold their 11th practice of training camp on Thursday, and it will once again take place behind closed doors. Of course, Pats Pulpit will be on hand to report from the session.
