Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 2, Charlotte Knights (CWS) 1 – Game 1
Offense was at a premium last night as the Tides and Knights had just three hits apiece and all three runs scored on solo home runs. Cade Povich started for the Tides and gave up three hits and three walks in five innings. He kept Charlotte off the board until the fifth inning.
Luis Vázquez and Silas Ardoin homered for the Tides. Their third hit was a single from Heston Kjerstad. They didn’t even have any walks.
Charlotte Knights 6, Norfolk Tides 1 – Game 2
Tides starter Nestor German allowed just one run on five hits through five innings
with five strikeouts. He exited the game with one out in the sixth inning and one runner on base. Relief pitcher Nick Raquet followed and allowed the first five batters he faced to reach before getting out of the inning. He got just one out at the plate; the other out on his pitching line came when Heston Kjerstad started a relay to throw out a runner at third.
The Tides had six hits in the game, two from Enrique Bradfield, Jr. Their only run scored on a sac fly from Creed Willems.
Double-A: Erie SeaWolves (DET) 6, Chesapeake Baysox 2
It was Joseph Dzierwa day for Chesapeake, and he allowed just one run on a homer. Overall, he allowed three hits in 4.2 innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three. Relief pitcher Christian Herberholz surrendered the other five runs in three innings work.
The Baysox outhit the SeaWolves, 10-9, but managed just two runs. Yohel Pozo, who was just claimed on waivers from the Cardinals, had two hits, including an RBI single. Not sure what he is doing at Double-A. Aron Estrada homered to score the other run. He had a three-hit game.
High-A: Frederick Keys 4, Rome Emperors (ATL) 2
The Keys and Emperors played the final three innings last night after the game was suspended on Thursday with a 1-1 score. The Keys plated three in the ninth. After walks to Wehiwa Aloy and Victor Figueroa, Braylin Tavera smacked a two-run double. Tavera moved to third on a single by Leandro Arias and scored on a groundout.
Caden Hunter started the game on Thursday and pitched 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts, no walks, and just one unearned run. Todd Kniebbe pitched the ninth and allowed the Emperors one run but picked up the save.
The Keys and Emperors had another game scheduled for last night but it was postponed. They’ll play a doubleheader today starting at 5 pm.
Injury Note: Last year’s first-round draft pick, Ike Irish, is out for the rest of the year after tearing his meniscus on a slide. Irish was in the midst of a fantastic season in Frederick, OPS’ing .915 with 16 home runs and 20 doubles. The injury occurred on Wednesday. What a bummer.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 9, Hill City Howlers (CLE) 4
The Shorebirds had two big innings: a four-run fourth and a five-run seventh. In the fourth, Jaiden Lo Re started the rally with a walk, then came all the way around to score on a single by Jordan Sanchez. JD Layton walked to put two runners on for Andrés Nolaya, who hit his fifth home run of the year. In the seventh, Lo Re, Nolaya, and Stiven Martinez combined to knock in five runs on three singles.
Starter Christian Rodriguez pitched five strong innings and just one unearned run scored. It came in the first on a throwing error by Lo Re. Rodriguez allowed three hits and two walks. He struck out five. The Howlers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth without the benefit of a hit. Jason Shockley walked two, balked, had a runner reach on yet another error by Lo Re, hit a guy, and threw a wild pitch. Just another day in Low-A!
