The Golden State Warriors still haven’t added any players from outside the organization this offseason (save for in the 2026 NBA Draft), but some of their reunions are fairly intriguing. On Thursday, the team agreed to a one-year deal with center Charles Bassey, as first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Warriors later announced the news.
Bassey spent most of last year playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League, while also playing seven games, combined, for the Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia
76ers, and Boston Celtics. Golden State added him to the roster late in the year, and the 25-year old shined: in five games, the five-year veteran averaged 20.0 minutes, 10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks, while shooting 67.7% from the field. He was fluent playing in the Warriors’ offense, and displayed a lot of defensive ability, while often acting as a bully in the paint … a role the Warriors have been desperate for.
After the season, Bassey made it clear that he would love to return to the Warriors, but it was unclear if there would be a spot for him.
That spot opened up earlier this week, when the Warriors declined to match a three-year, $30 million, partially-guaranteed offer sheet that the Memphis Grizzlies extended to Quinten Post. With Post headed to Tennessee, the Warriors had just two bigs under contract in Al Horford and Kristaps Porziņģis. Given the health issue of each, the Warriors needed another center, and maybe even two more. While there was some speculation of a reunion with Kevon Looney, that option dried up when Looney opted to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. And suddenly the door was wide open for someone who made one hell of an impression a few months ago.
Bassey becomes the 11th Warrior on the roster, though that number is functionally 12 since it seems all but certain that Draymond Green will re-sign in time. Golden State is unlikely to sign any player above the minimum until LeBron James makes his free agency decision.
