Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson has recorded just 12 catches in 14 games played through his first two seasons in the NFL. After an injury-riddled rookie season and an inconsistent second year, many have written the former third-round pick off. Could a new coaching staff and another offseason of working with Aaron Rodgers be exactly what Wilson needs to prove himself as a legitimate NFL receiver? Rodgers seems to think so.
During his first press conference of training camp on Tuesday, the quarterback
was not shy about his expectations for the young wideout heading into 2025.
“I expect him to start to make some splash plays,” Rodgers said Tuesday. “He did in the spring. I expect him to have a nice camp.”
Rodgers and Wilson had formed a nice connection last summer in Latrobe, and after a strong summer showing, many expected Wilson to take a step up in 2025. However, Wilson didn’t see the opportunities that many were hoping for.
New head coach Mike McCarthy’s offense will feature more 11 personnel, meaning three wide receivers on the field at a time, and more opportunities to go around. If Wilson puts together a nice camp, he will certainly have more opportunities to make some splash plays like Rodgers is hoping for.
Although it has been a tumultuous start to a career for Wilson, it may not be smart to write him off just yet.
