The New York Giants have finally made a move in free agency to bolster their defensive line, announcing the signing of veteran defensive tackle Sam Roberts.
A 6-foot-5, 300-pounder who turns 28 next month, Roberts was a sixth-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has played in 20 NFL games over four seasons with the Patriots, Carolin Panthers, and Atlanta Falcons.
Roberts had the only sack of his career and two quarterback hits while playing 102 defensive snaps for the Falcons
in 2025. He played in just five games before landing on injured reserve with ankle and knee injuries. Roberts played 74 of his 102 snaps at nose tackle last season.
This appears to be a low-cost gamble on a player who was playing the best football of his career last season before being injured.
The Giants have two veteran defensive linemen who are free agents, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and D.J. Davidson.

Overview
Highly decorated defensive tackle with very good career production against Division II competition. The jump to the next level could be difficult for him as he lacks the needed bend and hand skill.
Strengths

- Blocked five kicks during his career, including three in 2019.

- Plays with a narrow base and below-average change of direction.
