Roma’s highly publicized pursuit of Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho continues into its second week. However, despite a reported two-hour meeting between United, Sancho, and his representatives, we are still no closer to a resolution.
When news broke last week that Roma was trying a bold double-swoop for wingers Leon Bailey and Jadon Sancho, it seemed too far-fetched to be true, even by silly season standards. While Roma has acquired half of that potentially dynamic duo, the Sancho mystery has been
harder to unravel.
While many believed Sancho’s salary demands were delaying the deal, which is likely a piece of the puzzle, today’s summit revealed a more ambiguous yet no less frustrating revelation: Sancho simply cannot make up his mind.
According to Sportitalia’s Alfredo Pedulla, today’s summit between Sancho and the United management confirmed that, despite rumors to the contrary, there are no issues regarding transfer fees, agents’ commissions, or any other financial matters. Without the benefit of telepathy, none of us can truly understand what’s going on inside Sancho’s mind, but Pedulla offered a guess:
Sancho, who has not yet turned down Roma, is experiencing a personal phase of understandable confusion given that it is his final farewell to the English club, an experience in the Premier League that he would have liked to honour differently. So, confusion mixed with disappointment is there. And for this reason Roma is still waiting, it is no coincidence – as already told – that they have decided not to sink into other attacking wingers. At least for now…
Jenky’s internet translations aside, Pedulla’s speculation seems reasonable – Sancho is facing a significant and potentially career-changing decision. If he gets this right, he can revive his once-promising career, rebuild his reputation, and maybe even rejoin the England national team.
Unless a surprise suitor appears, it’s Roma or bust for Sancho. He can always take a risk with free agency next summer, but another season on loan or sitting on the United bench won’t make him an attractive option next year.
At this point, all we can do is wait…
