While trying to finish assembling a staff, retain his roster from the transfer portal and acquire new talent via said portal, Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham took the time to join FS1’s “Wake Up Barstool” program Monday morning to talk with noted Michigan fan and founder of Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy.
During the interview, he was asked about quarterback Bryce Underwood and if there’s been a decision made regarding his future at Michigan.
“I think Bryce is in a good place right now,” Whittingham
said. “I think he might be getting an announcement here pretty soon.”
Whittingham went on to discuss Underwood’s leadership qualities as well.
“He’s really enjoyed his time here,” Whittingham said of Underwood. “He’s one of the team leaders. He’s a young guy but he’s one of the team leaders obviously by virtue of the position. He is a guy that we think is going to be a part of what we’re doing going forward, but you never know until it’s a done deal.”
The transfer portal opened on Jan. 2, and players have until the 16th to enter their name in the portal. As of now, 18 Wolverines have entered the portal, with some of the notable names being Cole Sullivan, Zeke Berry, Jake Guarnera and Andrew Sprague.
During the interview, Whittingham was also asked how he landed at Michigan. While he didn’t go into specifics, he did provide a brief overview of how the stars aligned.
Coach Whittingham has been hard at work assembling his staff and attempting to retain players. An Underwood announcement should be the catalyst to a busy next two weeks in Ann Arbor.
