Ole Miss and Vanderbilt will still play basketball on Saturday, but the game will be moved to Nashville rather than Oxford due to the impacts of Winter Storm Fern.
The Oxford community and Ole Miss campus have been massively impacted by ice accumulation, downed trees and loss of electricity. In an email sent out by Ole Miss athletics, the details of how this will impact the schedule was a simple flip with a future road game this season with Vanderbilt.
“The Southeastern Conference and the Ole Miss
men’s basketball program announced adjustments to their schedule on Thursday, changing the location for their two games with Vanderbilt,” the email reads.
“Originally set to be played in the SJB Pavilion, the game on Saturday, January 31 will now be played in Nashville, Tennessee and tipoff at 5 p.m. The second matchup between Ole Miss and Vanderbilt will take place on Tuesday, March 3 or Wednesday, March 4 and will now be played in Oxford, Mississippi,” Ole Miss athletics said. “TV broadcast details for each game are yet to be determined. Date and time for the March matchup in Oxford will be determined at a later date as well. All tickets purchased for the Saturday, January 31 game originally scheduled to be played in Oxford will be honored at the rescheduled home game versus Vanderbilt on March 3 or March 4.”
Obviously, there is a lot more important things to many of us than the basketball schedule and timing of games, but there is also a lot of normalcy that can be restored by seeing things continue to move forward. It has to have been very difficult for head coach Chris Beard, his staff and the team to be able to practice and prepare since this weekend, so a road trip to top 25 Vanderbilt isn’t exactly what anyone would select right now.
But hey, dammit if the Rebels pull off the upset under these kinds of conditions it’d make for one helluva story.
