One of the consensus standout players in pre-season over the summer for Liverpool was 20-year-old Chester born forward Lewis Koumas, whose work-rate, pressing, and link-up play had most pencilling him in for at least a role in the domestic cups this season for the club.
On Tuesday, Liverpool kicked off their League Cup campaign against Tottenham, and Koumas did indeed get the nod from head coach Andoni Iraola. And he very much impressed, lively throughout and named player of the match for his contributions
to the Reds’ eventual 3-1 win.
“I’m just really happy and very grateful for the opportunities that I’ve been given,” the young academy graduate said following the match. “You never know when your last time on the pitch for Liverpool is going to be so I just try to leave everything out there every time.
“My hunger comes from representing Liverpool Football Club, wanting to give everything for the best club in the world. A lot is about what I do off the ball. The gaffer has shown trust in me that I can carry out his plans tactically so I was happy to do that and I want to kick on now.”
Tuesday was actually Koumas’ fourth appearance of the season, but it was his first start with three previous substitute appearances adding up to just 15 minutes of action. Based on his outing on Tuesday, though, few would be surprised by more minutes moving forward.
