What is the story about?
Yesterday the Mariners appeared in a game of record-setting, bombastic theatrics. If you have watched every game of the 2026 Mariners except yesterday’s game, that could mean anything to you, but fear not, it was the Seattle nine who took center stage and stole the show, until the fireworks ran out. That last part is not a bit!
In Mariners news:
- LHP Kade Anderson has arrived at the big stage, and Ryan Blake at Fangraphs sets and assesses the scene for the upcoming final act of the season.
- SS Colt Emerson is set to have season-ending wrist surgery, the announcement coming not long after a re-assignment to Triple-A.
- Justin Hollander provided brief injury updates for several players, including Matt Brash and Bryan Woo.
- The series preview for the Mariners and Phillies from sister site The Good Phight was an interesting read, the section on Cal Raleigh in particular after game one has now been settled. (A friendly reminder to be aware of site guidelines before thinking about getting all froggy in another team’s comment section)
- LHP Jhonathan Díaz has been outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.
- Cal Raleigh and Dan Wilson, a duo that’s a real trifecta.
- Also this!
- There is no floor, but the dugout definitely has a ceiling, and Cal reached it last night.
- When a top prospect like Kade Anderson debuts, there are typically a lot of stories around it. After all, it’s a whole new ballgame. Geoff Pontes over at Baseball America talks about how actually, it’s a whole new ball, and what that means for the lefty starter.
- J.P. Crawford was seen putting in some pre-game work at shortstop.
- Mariners 2026 first round draftee Ace Reese has already been turning heads, and has made the prospect notes over at Baseball Prospectus. ($)
Around the league(s):
- The Yankees are calling up recent signing and former Mariner RHP Justin Topa.
- Speaking of former Seattle relievers, is Trent Thornton good? North Side Baseball asks the question and presents their answer. Spoiler alert: maybe!
- If the lockout next year means no MLB games but yes MiLB games, I guess I’ll just be spending an above average amount of time in Tacoma and Everett.
- The Rockies have placed LHP Kyle Freeland on the 15-day IL retroactive to Aug. 21st, and have selected RHP Blake Adams from Triple-A.
- The Women’s Pro Baseball League is in the midst of an inaugural season that has had a lot of hope attached to it, but there may already be some trouble brewing as a board member has began legal filings concerning disputes around the league’s finances.
- So… the Marlins just cleaned house of their scouting department. Yikes! ($ – The Athletic)
- Private equity taking over youth sports en masse… what could go wrong? ($ – Intelligencer)
- Legacy player and two-way star, Kinley Rasmus has dazzled in this year’s Little League Baseball World Series. ($ – The Athletic)
