With continuing hostilities throughout the region stemming from the United States and Israel’s attacks on Iran earlier this year, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s own conflict with rebels in neighboring Yemen has escalated, leading to multiple events in the country being postponed or cancelled.
The wrestling world has been closely following the story, as WWE is still planning to hold its Crown Jewel premium live event there on Sat., Nov. 7.
The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a new security alert
today (Oct. 21).
It prompted reports that the Embassy was order to be evacuated, which State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott corrected as only being for nonessential personnel and their families:
The U.S. Department of State issued an ordered departure for non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia only.
Iranian-supported Houthis have increasingly engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure resulting in civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions.
The safety and security of Department personnel and their families remain our highest priority, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to protect and support them.
WWE reportedly has back-up locations in mind, but hasn’t publicly mentioned moving or rescheduling Crown Jewel.
More as we have it.
