Last Friday, the last time these two teams faced off against one another, the San Francisco Firebells scored a league-record 17 runs and easily defeated the L.A. Queens. Since then the Queens went on to clobber the Boston Hunters 13-3 and the Firebells traded wins with the New York Heights.
As things stand heading into tonight’s contest, the Firebells hold a slim half game lead for the leagues best record.
This will be the final time these two teams match up against one another in the regular season. With both teams emerging as the favorites to take home the inaugural WPBL championship, tonight’s match will be key in establishing the narrative heading into the final stretch of the season.
Can the Queens pitching contain Kelsi Whitmore and the rest of the Firebells dangerous lineup? They have only managed to limit the Firebells to fewer than eight runs once in the four games these two teams have already faced off in.
Against the rest of the league the Queens have yet to lose but the Firebells have so far seemed to have their number. If the Firebells end their season series with the Queens with a fourth victory, they will likely be viewed as the favorite for the overall championship come September.
