Let’s State the obvious: Purdue got it’s ass beat today.
The Boilermakers lose so rarely in Mackey that any loss stands out. A loss on Keady Court as the no. 1 team in America by 23 points? They could have
played the Oklahoma City Thunder and I wouldn’t have expected that.
The Cyclones weathered and early storm (METAPHOR) and Purdue missed it’s first half chance at a kill shot. I will break it down in more detail later today when I get home on my computer, but like the Texas Tech, there was a spot midway throw the first half where Purdue had multiple chances to unleash one of those classic Mackey blitzes. You know what I am taking about. When a couple key threes fall, the defense gets a turnover and a runout, the glass is dominated by Cluff/Jacobsen and TKR, and basically Purdue puts another team in hell.
That’s exactly what happened against Texas Tech. Today had a similar spot, but the shots didn’t fall. Iowa State survived, then thrived as Purdue turned in an overall worse game than against FDU and St. Peter’s.
I will Zapruder film this later tonight, but overall I am not worried. This was not Iowa State’s defense having a great day. It was not their offense taking over. It was Purdue falling completely apart in every phase of the game unlike we have seen in a while.
- 4 of 18 from three. You’re gonna struggle to beat McCutcheon high school shooting like that. Many were good looks from good shooters too. Loyer was 1 of 5 and he shoots so well in Mackey. Mayer, Benter, and Harris were a combined 0 for 7. It was a poor shooting performance that.bordered on appalling.
- 11 offensive rebounds given up.
- 41% overall from the floor.
- The defense completely fell apart in the second half, and that demoralized everyone.
Iowa State is good, but not “25 points better than Purdue” good. This was the infamous game where a team just doesn’t have it. There is no reason to panic. Purdue is still a top 5 team, can get back to No. 1 later, and but has no effect on the Big Ten standings.
I will have more later, but here is our postgame video from Mackey.
