Last season, as Liverpool sought to transition from manager Jürgen Klopp to Arne Slot, there were fears it could be the end of an era and most hoped the step back wouldn’t be too significant. Instead, a team still built around a number Klopp-era legends went and won the Premier League title at a cantor.
When 2024-25 ended, confidence was high. Not everything might be the same, but the club seemed to have managed the transition and everyone agreed success would continue into the future. As far above
expectation as that previous season had been, though, 2025-26 has fallen short of expectation. And whatever it is that comes next, it seems clear an era has well and truly come to an end.
That was driven home today when Andy Robertson, the club’s best left back of the Premier League era—and arguably the best in Liverpool’s long and storied history—confirmed that as has long been suspected he will depart the club at the end of the season when his current contract expires.
The news isn’t surprising. The assumption going back months has been that Robertson will depart. In fact, he almost joined Tottenham in January, with only Liverpool’s failure to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his Roma loan stopping Robertson’s own transfer going through. Robertson has also been linked with a return to Scotland at various point over the past year.
Still, surprising or not, it’s major news, and following the recent official confirmation that Mohamed Salah would depart in the summer, it’s a clear signal that whatever Liverpool looks like next season it will be a group with almost no connection to the sides fans grew attached to over the past decade.
What comes next for Liverpool seems increasingly uncertain, and on the evidence of the current season at least there are no strong leaders waiting in the wings to replace yet another departure of a key Klopp-era star. That, though, is a problem the club have given themselves.
For Robertson, the only question now is whether he wants to head back to Scotland to put a bow on his career or if he still wants to try to contribute at the highest levels and so stays in England or moves to another top league on the continent. Wherever he ends up, we’ll wish one of the club’s all time greats nothing but the best.
