Is it too early to declare that Victor Wembanyama has broken basketball? It sure looked like that on Wednesday night as he dominated the game on both sides of the court, changing the shape of the game as shooters refused to shoot whenever he was in range, and easily getting to the basket with a variety of moves on the offensive end. He also showed he has added a new element to his game, bullying smaller players in the paint.
While Victor deserves all of the flowers, the rest of the Spurs were doing fine against the Mavericks, even winning the minutes that Wemby rested by a significant margin. Stephon Castle looks ever better that he did in his rookie of the year season, except for free throw shooting. Devin Vassell is benefiting from the additional space generated by Wemby’s gravity, and after a slow start, Keldon Johnson dominated in the paint for the bench. Dylan Harper had a nice effort in his first NBA action. Even the garbage time crew had a fun time extending the lead after both teams went to the bench late. When Jeremy Sochan and De’Aaron Fox are back in the lineup, it’s going to be hard to find everybody minutes.
Tonight, they face the 0-1 Pelicans, led by Zion Williamson, who (really, this time) is in NBA shape at the start of the season. They are a team with a lot of talent, and the Smoothie King Center is always a tough place to play, despite the silly name. Mitch Johnson seems to have the team dialed in to start the season, so it could be another blowout win, but if the Spurs allow New Orleans to hang around, this could be a tough game at the end. Let’s watch and find out!
Game Prediction:
Victor Wembanyama and Zion Williamson will roll out a new comedy routine based on Abbot and Costello, eschewing Who’s on First? to do the classic Slowly I Turned (Niagara Falls) routine.
