Liverpool haven’t had much time to recover from Saturday’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Fulham in the Premier League with a League Cup match against Tottenham coming up quickly for them on Tuesday, and especially after that disappointing showing on the weekend there is some heavy rotation expected.
For head coach Andoni Iraola, it will be a chance to test out some youth and fringe players in a game that matters for the first time. It will also mark a return to action for Joe Gomez, with the manager
saying that the only real question heading into the match is how much Gomez plays rather than if he’s involved.
“He is training with the team again now,” Iraola said when asked about the status of Gomez on Monday at his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s cup. “I think that he’s going to be available for tomorrow and now it’s a matter of deciding how much he can play and what is the best thing to do.”
In other injury news, things aren’t quite as advanced for Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni, with both defenders having been out for some time now with injuries and slowing working their way back to fitness. As of today, neither has yet been able to return to training with teammates with return dates uncertain.
“I think [Bradley] is not close to training with the team,” Iraola added. “He’s still training alone but he has started touching the ball, so definitely I want him as quick as possible ready but it’s a long-term injury. And I think Leoni is a little bit ahead of him so still it’s going to take some time for Conor, yes.”
