Righthanded pitcher Jose Corniell has been promoted from AA Frisco to AAA Round Rock, the Rangers announced today.
Corniell, who turned 22 in June, missed all of 2024 and the first part of 2025 due to Tommy John surgery. In 2023, he put up a 2.92 ERA in 101 innings between Hickory and Down East, which earned him the 2023 Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year award.
Corniell made four rehab appearances in the Arizona Complex League in July before moving up to Frisco, where he made his first appearance on July 19.
In 20 innings for the Roughriders, he has allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out 20. A 20:1 K:BB ratio is, I think, pretty impressive.
Corniell was acquired from the Seattle Mariners, along with a player to be named later who became infielder Andres Mesa, after the 2020 season in exchange for reliever Rafael Montero. Corniell is on the 40 man roster, so it is not out of the question that we could see him get an appearance or two in the majors at the end of September.
