The hopes are high for rising heavyweight prospect Gable Steveson, but some believe the former Olympic gold medalist is ready for the best fighters in the world right now.
Steveson, who signed with UFC earlier this month, is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweight prospects to ever come through the mixed martial arts (MMA) ranks. His wrestling background is one of the most decorated ever for a fighter in combat sports and with ongoing training alongside Jon Jones and Jackson MMA the sky is truly
the limit for Steveson.
The 25-year-old prospect is expected to make his anticipated Octagon debut this July for International Fight week, but Steveson’s first opponent has yet to be determined. Some believe UFC matchmakers will take it easy on Steveson so he can work through his Octagon jitters while others believe the wrestling superstar is ready for the biggest heavyweight names the sport has to offer.
Former UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, even believes that Steveson is ready to fight for UFC gold right now. In a matchup with UFC heavyweight king, Tom Aspinall, “Chosen One” claims that Steveson would “torture” the champ and make things look easy.
“Gable Stevenson will become heavyweight champion,” Woodley told talkSPORT BET. “He can do it this year if he wants to.
“Tom Aspinall will get tortured by Gable right now. Tom looked sloppy against Ciryl Gane before he got poked in the eye. Gable has got powerful hands, all his fights are finishes. He has crazy wrestling, crazy athletic ability.
“He’s hungry,” Woodley continued. “You think he’s still happy about losing the NCAA championship in the last three seconds? Hell no.
“I don’t see a matchup in the UFC now at heavyweight that he does not win.”
