On March 19, less than a week before their Opening Day showdown with the New York Yankees, the San Francisco Giants will play the Cincinnati Reds in this year’s Spring Breakout game. The Spring Breakout, which is in its third year, is an exhibition made up entirely of prospects, and is one of the most exciting games of Spring Training for anyone with an interest in prospects and young talent.
The Giants announced the initial roster for the exhibition on Wednesday, and it’s headlined by the two consensus
top prospects in the organization: first baseman Bryce Eldridge, and shortstop Josuar González. Perhaps just as excitingly, shortstop Luis Hernández — the top prospect in the 2026 international signing period, who only recently turned 17 and has yet to make his professional debut — is included. This comes following an exciting report from Baseball America that the Giants will take the unconventional route and have Hernández forego the Dominican Summer League and jump straight to the Arizona Complex League.
Wednesday’s reveal is a preliminary 40-player roster based on MLB Pipeline’s list of the team’s top 30 prospects, with additions made by the team to reach 40. The roster will then be trimmed to 23-27 players a few days before the game.
Here’s the full preliminary roster:
The game is at 1:05 p.m. PT at Scottsdale Stadium, and can be watched on NBC Sports Bay Area, MLB Network, and MLB.TV.
