Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.
- Selected from Triple-A Reno: RHP Taylor Rashi (No. 54)
- Optioned to Reno following last night’s game: RHP Juan Morillo
- Designated for assignment: INF Tristin English
Morillo pays for his inability to record an out in a tied game, and receives a ticket to Reno as a result. He is replaced with another new face. Rashi has made the climb up from originally being a 23rd-round pick by the Giants, to become one of the more reliable arms in the Reno bullpen, with a 3.48 ERA across 67.1 innings. He has mostly been in the bullpen, but has thrown nineteen innings across ten August
appearances in relief, so should be able to give a bit of much-needed length. Rashi was claimed off minor-league waivers in December 2022 off waivers, from the Double-A affiliate of the Giants, the Richmond Flying Squirrels. I just wanted to say that.
Looking at the bullpen chart above, I imagine it’s quite likely he’ll see action tonight. When you score a total of 13 runs in consecutive contests, you would normally expect to win one of them. But thanks to the back-to-back meltdown of Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Pfaadt, the D-backs were put in a hole which was just too big to climb out off. If my scanning of game logs is correct, it’s the first time, excluding obvious openers, Arizona has had two such short starts since September 2020, with Caleb Smith and Alex Young. The former was never “particularly” a starter though. You can go back to the previous September when Young follow Robbie Ray in abbreviated outings.
[Oh, and the picture on the home page is not ChefAZ celebrating getting his playoff tickets. It’s Rashi, when he was on the Amarillo Sod Poodles, after they won the Texas League Championship against the Arkansas Travelers in September 2023. I just thought it was an amusing one to pop up when I searched for Rashi in our database of photos!]
