Happy Monday, Wisconsin sports fans! The Milwaukee Brewers will open up the World Series on Friday (yes, that’s a true statement) and the Green Bay Packers just beat the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys convincingly in back-to-back weeks.
What a time it is to be alive.
Although the Packers’ defense got to feast on Chicago’s backup quarterbacks last week, that was not the case on Sunday night, when Dallas trotted out its full-strength offense at Lambeau Field. All Jonathan Gannon did was dismantle it piece
by piece, using a heavy dose of zone coverage and some well-timed, creative blitz packages to make life a living hell for Dak Prescott.
By the fourth quarter, it seemed like Prescott didn’t even want to be there. His throwaway on 4th down from inside the red zone looked like a give-up play, and although Dallas scored a late touchdown to pull back to within ten points, it didn’t really feel like the Cowboys ever had a serious chance of making a comeback. Instead, the Packers have now gone three games without allowing more than 14 points, their first such streak since 2016, and they posted the third game of that streak against a team thought to have one of the best offenses in the NFL.
And, to make things even more encouraging, they won convincingly despite not playing their A game. The offense left points on the board thanks to drops, penalties, and a decent amount of slippage in line play, to say nothing of the lack of a run game. But Jordan Love is hanging tough under pressure and slinging the ball around to his talented receivers, who would have even more impressive stat lines if they’d just hold onto the football.
It feels like this team is rounding into form just in time for a tough stretch on the schedule. If they can clean up some of the execution issues on offense, this Packers team will have a chance to do much more than just be the 7th seed in the playoffs once again.
