It wasn’t a good night for Lehigh Valley, but the news was much better out of Reading, where Gage Wood was backed by four home runs, and the Fightin’ Phils reached the precipice of a spot in the Eastern League playoffs.
Worcester 8, Lehigh Valley 3
The IronPigs fell into an early hole on Wednesday, giving up seven runs in the first four innings. Starting pitcher Brian Keller had a rough game, as he was responsible for all seven of those runs.
The ‘Pigs offense was quiet for most of the game before a too little, too late three-run
eighth inning. Gabriel Rincones was one of the few players to have a good game with two hits, including his third home run of the season.
Reading 11, Erie 3
The Fightin’ Phils reduced their magic number for a playoff spot to one by bashing the Erie Seawolves on Wednesday. Gage Wood had another encouraging start, giving up two runs in his five innings to earn his first win of his career.
The Phils backed him with plenty of offense including four home runs. Aroon Escobar, Bryson Ware, Raylin Heredia, and Carson DeMartini all went deep in the game.
The Phils will attempt to clinch a playoff spot on Thursday as their series against the Seawolves continues.
