World Cup 2026 is just a day away and excitement is building across the planet as teams go for glory in the USA, Mexico and Canada over the next few weeks.
The tournament generally never fails to conjure up magic moments, produce new heroes and throw up some surprises along the way.
Spain head into the tournament as one of the favorites and will be hoping to win the trophy for the second time.
For Spain fans, World Cup 2010 in South Africa brings back fond memories as La Roja won their maiden title
thanks to that goal from Andreas Iniesta in the final.
The 1986 World Cup is remembered for many things, not least Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ and his outrageous second goal against England on the way to lifting the title.
There was also plenty of excitement four years later in Italy, with Roger Milla’s dancing, Toto Schillaci’s goals and Paul Gascoigne’s tears all making for a memorable tournament.
The 2006 edition will be remembered for Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final, while four years earlier Ronaldo Nazario had stolen all the headlines with a rather special haircut as Brazil won their fifth World Cup.
And don’t forget 2022 which brought an incredible final and saw Lionel Messi finally complete football by winning the World Cup for the first time against France.
