Newcastle United are exploring a high-profile move for Sporting CP forward Luis Suarez as they keep looking for options to strengthen their striker corps this summer.
“Newcastle United have the financial muscle to meet the £70million release clause for Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez this summer,” Football Insider reported on May 16.
The striker has emerged as one of several forward options under consideration following a prolific campaign in Portugal, but it’d take a whole lot of money to complete
a transfer for the Sporting striker.
“The Magpies are huge admirers of the 28-year-old hitman, and could look to offload some of their current attacking options in order to make a big-money swoop even more achievable,” the report says. “Sporting are ‘relaxed’ over his future and have little intention of entertaining a cut-price sale.”
Despite Newcastle’s financial capability, the deal is not viewed as straightforward, mostly because paying so much money for a single player could hurt NUFC’s possibilities of reinforcing the squad elsewhere.
“Newcastle are aware of the fact that it will be ‘difficult’ to strike a deal for Suarez ahead of next season,” the report says.
The player, for one, doesn’t look to be disgruntled nor looking for a way out of Portugal, and having Champions League football in front of him next season while Newcastle will only compete domestically could also reinforce his belief he’d be better off staying put in Lisbon.
“Suarez is understood to be happy and settled in Lisbon and is also keen to continue playing Champions League football,” the report says. “That currently presents a major stumbling block for any potential deal.”
