As always, preseason friendlies are very good opportunities for young players to get game time and show fans what they can do. Already, the likes of Tim Binder and Maycon Cardozo have impressed fans, but Bastian Assomo got in on the act in the 2-1 win over Jeju SK, making intelligent runs, providing a focal point up front, demonstrating his freakish size and speed at just 16 and, of course, scoring the game winner just before half time with a beautiful shot from outside of the penalty area.
After
the match, Bayern’s #8, Tom Bischof, praised the young striker.
“He’s a very good footballer, classic striker, scores goals, which we need. I’m very happy for him and all the youngsters who got the chance to prove themselves. Basti Assomo’s hold up play and finishing are brutal for his age. He’s a classic box striker, that’s his strength.,” Bischof said (via @iMiaSanMia).
Bischof is dead on the money in his analysis, as the former Hertha Berlin youth player showed exactly why youth coaches rate him so highly.
Once Assomo returns from the first team’s preseason, he will rejoin Dante’s U-23s and get some experience against experienced pros in the Regionalliga Bayern. Given he is planned to remain at the club for the 2026/27 season instead of leaving on loan, it is not impossible that Assomo may make his competitive debut for Bayern sometime during the season.
