The Kansas City Chiefs wouldn’t be fixing everything by adding a wide receiver, but regardless, general manager Brett Veach is actively looking for one with just over a week before the NFL trade deadline.
Just before Kansas City blew the 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson made sure to share a report with the nearly-national audience about her conversation with Veach.
“I had a chance with GM Brett Veach, who told me that with Tyquan Thornton being out for the season
and Rashee Rice having a history with soft tissue injuries, they will explore what’s available at the wide receiver position.”
“You’ve heard Josh Downs or Brian Thomas Jr. being mentioned, but over the next week, they will make calls and see where everything stands and who is available.”
Wolfson’s report was accompanied by a graphic labeled “Wideout Woes” that showed the Chiefs’ rankings among NFL teams’ wide receiver rooms:
- 27th in receptions (59)
- 30th in yards (735)
- 31st in percentage of team receiving yards (49.9%)

The latest Kansas City Chiefs news
Chiefs, Steelers, Commanders have interest in Brian Thomas Jr. | Pro Football Talk
2024 first-rounder Brian Thomas Jr. has interest in a fresh start. And multiple teams are believed to be interested in acquiring him.
Currently, the Chiefs, Steelers, and Commanders have interest.
The Steelers, we’re told, have greater interest in Colts receiver Josh Downs. Downs, however, is Kansas City’s Plan B, if they can’t get Thomas away from the Jaguars.
Five things that stood out about the Chiefs’ loss to the Broncos in Denver | The Kansas City Star
The Chiefs’ initial third down never stood a chance.
Because the center, of all players, never gave it one.
Creed Humphrey has something of the yips with his shotgun snaps. They’re significant plays. The eventual incomplete pass was worth minus-1.5 points, per the RBSDM model. And an incomplete pass was best-case scenario after Patrick Mahomes scrambled just to collect the ball and alertly fire it out of bounds.
Broncos score 15 unanswered to win as Chiefs stopped at goal line | The Athletic
“The reality of things is we got to fix a lot,” tight end Travis Kelce said after the game. “The little things, mistakes — and it starts with the person you’re looking at. I’m one of them. I’ve been frustrated with myself on how long I’ve been in the league, and the procedural stuff that’s happened for the past three games, really — since the bye. It’s frustrating. You just can’t f—ing do it, excuse my language. I’ve got to be better for my teammates, and that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room.”
It looked like more Mahomes magic. Then the Broncos won a nail-biter — again. | NBC News
When Denver’s goal-line stand held firm after it sacked Mahomes on the final play, the game became the 35th of this season with a game-winning score in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime. (The NFL record through eight weeks is 36.)
Perhaps the ending, as wild as it was, should have been expected.
Over the past two seasons, Denver’s 16-2 record in one-score games is the league’s best.
“It has to come from we’ve done it before,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said.
Andy Reid defends Harrison Butker, but the numbers don’t | CBS Sports
Here’s the thing, though: 54 yards isn’t really within Butker’s range anymore. It may have been during his prime, but these days, he is not nearly consistent enough from that distance to justify trying that kick.
Here’s what we wrote just last week, for example, when Butker missed a pair of field goal attempts in the Chiefs’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks:
Through 2023, he made 89.1% of his total field goals, and 28 of 40 (70%) from beyond 50 yards. Since then, though, Butker has made just 82.2% of his kicks, and only 8-of-18 (44.4%) from beyond 50 yards. He missed one of those 50-plus-yard kicks short by several yards in this game, making him just 1-of-5 from 50-plus this year, and he missed another from 45 yards out, pushing it wide to the right.
‘Dogfight for division’: Chiefs face key stretch against trio of sub-.500 teams | KSHB 41
Aside from games on Nov. 27 at Pittsburgh (6-2), Dec. 25 against Buffalo (6-1) and Week 17 at New England, every other team on the Broncos’ schedule has a losing record except Las Vegas (4-4), which might be feisty enough to take a game off their longtime rivals.
Meanwhile, Kansas City faces a stretch beginning on Thanksgiving with five straight games against teams at .500 or better before wrapping up the season at the Los Angeles Chargers and against the Raiders at Arrowhead.

Ravens’ Lamar Jackson needs thumb surgery, will be placed on IR | ESPN
“Obviously, it sucks the way this game is kind of cruel like that,” Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton said.
The Ravens are dealing with a run of injuries at quarterback and are unsure who will start Thursday night’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Backup quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley left the game in the second quarter and didn’t return because of a right toe injury. Minter said he’s not sure of Huntley’s status.
Buccaneers’ Todd Bowles on zero-completion win over Falcons: There’s a ‘first time for everything’ | NFL.com
Tampa Bay instead outlasted the Falcons, 16-0, in a rain-soaked affair at Raymond James Stadium despite Mayfield attempting only three passes and converting on none of them, as the Bucs became the second team (1974 Bills) in the Super Bowl era to win a game without a single completion.
“I have not,” head coach Todd Bowles said when asked if he’s ever won without a completion, per the team’s transcript, “but there is a first time for everything.”
Lions All-Pro linebacker to remain in hospital after scary neck injury | USA Today
Campbell went down after making a tackle against Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson in the fourth quarter.
He remained down on the field as the training staff and medical personnel surrounded him and the cart arrived. Campbell was loaded onto a backboard before the cart took him off the field.
Lions teammates took a knee and looked concerned as staff attended to him. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was in tears while the game was paused.

Chiefs-Broncos: The Big takeaway from a Big loss in Denver
A false start by right tackle Jaylon Moore negated a potential game-winning touchdown by Rashee Rice, which was a theme of this game. According to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, the Chiefs committed eight penalties for 75 yards in the first half — the fourth time a Chiefs team has done that with Andy Reid as head coach.
Overall, the team finished with 11 penalties and 105 penalty yards going against them, but there was still a chance on fourth-and-6. With nowhere to go with the ball, Mahomes succumbed to a sack, and the game was over.
