It’s been exactly one week since Sherrone Moore was fired from his position as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. A lot has happened in the seven days since Moore’s firing and subsequent arrest, including
the university’s search for the next leader of the football program.
We are know learning of the first formal interview that Warde Manuel and company have conducted. As reported by The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb ($), interim head coach Biff Poggi was officially interviewed for the full-time position at some point on Tuesday.
In part, Webb wrote: “The former Charlotte head coach has secured backing from major donors and stabilized the program during turbulent times. While Poggi clearly ranks below Michigan’s primary targets, influential donors will push for his permanent appointment if top candidates fall through.”
That last sentence is important information to know. While Poggi certainly deserved a shot at the full-time job, especially for keeping the program together during an unprecedented time like this, he is highly unlikely to land the job unless all hell breaks loose and top targets like Kalen DeBoer, Kenny Dillingham and others fall through.
This is also a solid reminder to all of us that head coach searches take time. The fact Poggi was just formally interviewed on Tuesday goes to show that we are unlikely to see this search come to an end any time soon. We won’t get an official word from DeBoer until after Alabama’s run in the College Football Playoff, and it’s unclear if the Wolverines would immediately pivot to other candidates if the Tide win on Friday.
As always, we’ll continue to bring you all the latest developments as they are reported on and made available.
