On the latest Kap & J. Hood Show on ESPN 1000, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin dropped plenty of Chicago Bears nuggets about the upcoming free agency period, but what stood out to me was her thoughts on the ongoing comp pick saga the Bears are in with the NFL as it relates to the Atlanta Falcons hiring Ian Cunningham as their General Manager.
David Kaplan asked her if she thinks the Bears will ultimately receive the two third-round comp picks — by virtue of the Rooney Rule — for losing their assistant GM,
Cunningham, to the Falcons.
“Yeah, I actually do,” she said, “because the precedent here, and other front offices have dealt with this too, with the structure of who is actually making the football decisions. Anytime [Atlanta President] Matt Ryan gets in front of a microphone, he’s saying ‘I’m not the final say in personnel, that’s Ian Cunningham. ‘So it feels counterintuitive to the NFL’s policy of the Rooney Rule.”
Courtney says the Bears have made their case to the league and that she believes we’ll have a resolution by next week on which teams will receive compensatory selections.
She also said that center Tyler Linderbaum’s market will be in the $22 million range and that the Bears will make a push to get him.
Regarding a Maxx Crosby trade, Courtney said she does not believe the Bears would be involved if the Las Vegas Raiders hold firm on their desire for two first-round draft picks in return.
It’s a good spot from Courtney, and it starts about the 1:35 mark in this video linked above.
What do you think ultimately happens with the comp picks, with Linderbaum, and with Crosby?
