I’ve said this before, but I think the Mizzou-South Carolina matchup is my favorite ‘rivalry’ for the Tigers in the SEC. For our Tigers, we’re still the relatively new kids on the block, and Arkansas seems like the only natural geography based rivalry, but there’s virtually no history between the schools. I’m thankful Oklahoma is in the SEC now just for the sake of at least one of the old Big 8 rivals can still be around on a regular basis, even if historically Oklahoma kind of has the bigger advantage.
But for Missouri, they spent a good amount of time in the SEC East and the only annual game that seemed to have the juice with regularity was the game against the Gamecocks. Maybe I’d feel different about this if the Tigers were on the short end of the stick, but they’re still ahead 8-6 overall. When you think of the other teams from the old SEC East days, there was a hope you’d compete with Georgia, you kinda hated Tennessee if only because their fans were obnoxious, Kentucky seems okay, Vanderbilt seems okay, Florida was pretty terrible most of the time, but South Carolina and Missouri had a similar path.
The Gamecocks historically have just been ok, they’ve had good seasons and more bad ones. But when Steve Spurrier took the job he elevated the programs profile to the point where that’s where fans have their expectations now. I think Gary Pinkel did the same for Missouri.
So here we have two programs which are similar, thrust into a moment where one is fighting for their season goals after getting spanked at home by Vanderbilt last week, and the other is trying to sustain their momentum built off the first three games of the season. There’s hardware on the line.
