Germany’s World Cup preparations are now well underway. All the players (bar Kai Havertz, who competed in the Champions League final with Arsenal FC) have joined the camp and have enjoyed multiple days of training together in preparation for the World Cup. The friendly against Finland was the first chance for Germany to show the results of the training and build up excitement for Germany’s chances in football’s biggest competition.
It was a chance Germany grabbed with both hands, defeating their opponents
4-0 in a comfortable victory. Deniz Undav (twice), Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala got on the scoresheet, with manager Julian Nagelsmann happy about the way the match went.
“The guys implemented the match plan very well, we started well, the first 15 minutes were excellent,” the former Bayern Munich head coach explained in a post match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “In the second half, we also defended deeper at times, and then scored a counter-attacking goal, which is good for us. The result is good, we didn’t concede a goal, so we should carry on this way.”
Ultimately, a nation like Germany is expected to beat a smaller one like Finland. So, despite the good performance, only so much momentum can be won in such a match. Nagelsmann will know this. Germany will take on hosts USA on Saturday in their second and final friendly, in order to keep this momentum going.
