There is plenty of unknown about the Kansas City Chiefs heading into the season. Soon, the team will showcase how impactful the changes made this offseason were, but as of now, there’s no secret to who the team’s core players are.
Considering there are still a few free-agent veterans to keep in mind before camp gets underway, the roster is mostly set. So let’s fantasize.
Which all-time Chiefs player, at the peak of their powers, would you add to the team for just this season?
My mind immediately goes
to a playmaker like wide receiver Tyreek Hill, but that’s cheating! He’s still an active player… and may still don the red and gold again one day.
The thought of a pass catcher is intriguing; what about tight end Tony Gonzalez? With modern football evolving to look more similar to the era he played in, he and Kelce would be an incredible duo that keeps defenses guessing.
That said, the biggest hole on the offense is the starting right tackle position. When quarterback Patrick Mahomes began his ascension, he had Mitchell Schwartz giving him space to step and throw with clean pass protection on the right edge. The unit as a whole would start to rival the franchise’s all-time group from the early 2000s with a Schwartz-like player.
All that considered, the answer should be a defensive player, mainly because the obvious choice would elevate the unit more than what is even imaginable. Derrick Thomas was the ultimate edge rusher, the best of the best at a skill set that Kansas City has lacked in the era of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The hope is that rookie R Mason Thomas can bring the first-step quickness off the line that has been missing for years.
Let us know who you would drop into this year’s team in the comments!
