Kentucky football fans will hear a familiar sound at Kroger Field at some point this season, with the return of Waka Flocka Flame’s hit song “Grove Street Party” after it was noticeably absent from the Wildcats’ season opener against Toledo, according to Nick Roush of KSR.
The track has become a staple in Lexington since 2014, when Kentucky pulled off a memorable upset over South Carolina. Following that game, “Grove Street Party” quickly became the program’s unofficial anthem and was played during
major moments inside Kroger Field.
Traditionally, the song will be played as Kentucky walks onto the field before kickoff, setting the tone for the crowd and the players. It also returns late in games, most often between the third and fourth quarters, to energize fans for the final stretch. Its absence in Week 1 left many wondering if the tradition was gone for good.
That won’t be the case moving forward, as the song will make its return at some point, though it’s unclear if it will be back for Saturday’s highly anticipated SEC opener against Ole Miss, a matchup expected to draw a big crowd.
The energy of “Grove Street Party” has helped define the game-day atmosphere in Lexington, and its revival should come as welcome news for fans and players alike, whenever that may be.
